Deluge curates an ongoing, quarterly series of artists' moving image works for the outdoor community screen at the southwest corner of Oak Bay Ave and Davie St in Victoria. Presented in conjunction with LIVERY Victoria, Plaza can be viewed from the street, sidewalk and dedicated benches onsite (which also house a sound sculpture by Canadian composer Christopher Butterfield), installed beside a large-scale sculpture by Daniel Laskarin. The second Plaza program has a running time of approximately 15 minutes and can be experienced late afternoons/evenings from 4pm to 8pm, Wednesday through Sunday.

Anivides (Francisca Duran & Cristal Buemi) | 2024 | Canada | 5 min
diario de verano is an exploration of neighborhood flora in Tkaronto, focusing on Kensington Market, Parkdale and Wallace-Emmerson, areas we live and move through. Experimentation with abstract movement and the physical, compositional properties of foraged materials, strengthened our community/kinship to the land and each other. Artistic practices were explored and shared through gathering rituals, stop motion animation and phytograms, creating complex layers of ourselves intertwined through our latinx identities in this short film.
anivides is the interweaving experimental works of multidisciplinary artists Cristal Buemi and Francisca Duran focusing on analog and digital frame-by-frame approaches to showcase their abstract, study and practices. They explore the idea of weight on our structures due to environments, experiences and their direct relations to trauma, healing and transformation. anivides collages bodily works both in human and plant forms from a diasporic immigrant, BIPOC, femme, queer and intergenerational perspective. anivides’ recent film, diario de verano has screened at Dawson City Film Fest, Les Sommet Du Cinema D’animation, Antimatter Media Art, Analogica, L’Alternativa, LA Film Forum and won Best Animated Film at Moss Farm Film Invitational.

An anti-landscape performing its own impossible, inevitable annihilation. The north Florida woodlands fractured by strobe light, offering glimpses of its vitality and fragility. Over time, these flickering slices of the natural world become more corrupted and illegible, decaying into garbled data streams. As the forest fails to preserve itself, it demands that we re-calibrate our vision.
Dave Rodriguez is a media artist originally from Miami FL and currently based in Bloomington IN. His single-channel video, 16mm film and live expanded cinema work has been screened/performed in festivals and galleries across Europe and the Americas including Ann Arbor Film Festival, Antimatter, FLEX Film/Video Festival, Cosmic Rays, Mono No Aware, Strangloscope, FONLAD, Onion City Film Festival, Odds & Ends Experimental Film Festival, Florida Film Festival and others. His writing has been published in Found Footage Magazine, Islandia Journal and The Miami Rail.

As night falls over the fields, a woman looks into unknown areas: the space after a poem, the distance between map and territory, the darkness between film frames. A pastoral nocturne turns inside out. This 16mm work was shot at Film Farm in Mt. Forest, Ontario, then re-photographed with flashlight contact-printing. Intuitive processes consider the image and soundtrack as a living thing that breathes and decays.
Kate Solar is a filmmaker based in Kjipuktuk/Halifax. Her documentary and experimental film work probes the boundaries of memory and documentation, approaching the analog film frame as tactile material to investigate the poetics of the archive. Solar holds a BFA in Film from NSCAD University. Her practice has been supported by Canada Council for the Arts, Arts Nova Scotia, Struts Gallery, Atlantic Filmmakers’ Cooperative, Centre for Art Tapes, Lunenburg Doc Fest, Nocturne and more.
